Luke

International Luke Day.

Well, national.

Well, me.

Today is thirteen years since my closest friend died.

Gulp.

Italics just fit.

I need to fulfill a promise and throw a necklace into the harbour if I ever get to Hong Kong.

    So sorry.

What’s the significance of the necklace - if you don’t mind telling us about it?

  2. Leemer Says:

    Consider it International.

    Story goes like this.

Two kids meet. Both 14 year olds sharing a room at school with parents hundreds or thousands of miles away.

Friendship develops and hopes exchanged, we says one day we will go back to the place where we grew up. Me to Philadelphia, him to Hong Kong, particularly the harbour and the views from the boats there. One day, when we are 16, he has a medical crisis which involves me helping him through it.

We remain friends and go on to university. During that time, I go back to visit Philly. He still doesn’t have time to go to Hong Kong. When I return the the UK, the medical crisis happens again, and he dies.

I turn up at his house and our circle of friends ask me if there is anything of his that I want. I choose a small key ring, which I went on to wear around my neck for a couple of years.

We bury Luke in the Neds Atomic Dustbin t-shirt I bought for him last time we met.

I vow, one day, to throw the key ring into the harbour he wished so much to see again, so a part of him will go back to Hong Kong one day.

    Thanks for asking.

Hope you get to go to HK as soon as possible.

It is changing so rapidly, that soon, it will be very different from the one that has been 20 years ago …

Hey - January 20th was the 14th anniversary of my Dad’s passing. My dad’s name was Luke, too. Maybe they’re both wherever good souls go after they leave the earth, playing poker and watching over us. I like to think so.
