Me: That bit of work we were going to do? We’re not going to get time.
Colleague 1: Why not?
Me: Too busy. Sorry.
Colleague 1: I understand. It’s OK. We’re all fighting fires.
Me: And some of us are getting burned.
Colleague 2: I’m throwing petrol on mine.

You shoulda said, ‘So that’s what that smell is’. Or ‘ I thought I smelled gas’. Or better, perhaps more along the lines of positive thinking, ‘I’m making s’mores. Anyone got any marshmallows?’
Most of these are too ‘American’, I suspect.
