Sonnet 1
Girl to Shakespeare: “Write a sonnet.”
Shakespeare to the girl: “I’m on it.
” ‘Shall I liken you to Spring?’ ”
“Summer’s day’s a better thing.”
Shakespeare: “Yeah, you really think?”
“Certain.” (Will dips quill in ink)
“And why not try ’shall I compare?’ ”
Shakespeare shoots a steely stare.
“Instead of ‘you’, I’d go with ‘thee’.”
Shakespeare: “Yeah, but you ain’t me.
“You needn’t be so heavy handed.”
“Read it back,” the girl demanded.
” ‘Shall I compare thee to, ‘ quote:
‘a Summer’s day.’ ”
“That’s what you wrote.”
