That Was Take That, That Was

The Thats were on telly over t’weekend (ooh-er). I watched it and I have to say they were good.

Shush now.

It’s only when you realise how many rubbish ones there are trying to copy the good ones, that you realise something is actually not that easy. Like blogging, a bit.

I’ve always wondered about Gary Barlow. He writes songs and those labours stay in the blood, so he’s probably got bags of new tunes knocking about that he can’t use because people don’t want to hear them.

But they busted one out on the show after the usual standards, and it was just wierd. It was a bit Sergeant Pepper on LSD.

What?

It was?

OK, it was Sergeant Pepper on loads more LSD.

Can I say, in the highbrow defensive style of Tom Paulin: “I rather liked it.”

I liked the Take That show too, and I feel I can now admit that I was gutted when they didn’t play Babe. I’d also like to take this opportunity to stand up and be counted as a fan of both Keane AND Coldplay.
I don’t suppose your replacement also watched the X Factor, did s/he?

  2. Cliff Says:

My replacement has no idea what you are talking about. X Factor? Is that rude?

I was once at a wedding with Jason Orange’s cousin. He looked alot like him and obviously dug the fact.

He got very drunk, started talking to girls and when Want You Back came on, he stumbled to the dance floor on his own and did the moves from the video while lipsynching.

  3. wendy Says:

    Is he single?

  4. Cliff Says:

This was a while ago, but I’m guessing yes.

  5. Katy Newton Says:

You know, I had exactly the same feeling as your “friend”…

(I want you to know that I did that annoying “drawing quotes in the air with your fingers whilst hunching your shoulders” thing when I said “friend” there)

… when I watched the Audience with the Thats the other night.

I turned to the Chairwoman during “A Million Love Songs” and said, “It says something about the crap they churn out in the charts these days that this song now actually sounds like a quality love song.”

I then realised that I am old. Old before my time.

It’s at times like this that I start wondering if the birth registrar made a mistake and I was actually born in 1956 instead of 1976.

  6. Cliff Says:

Katy - 76! I’m 34, so if it’s not your time, then my number was up a long ways ago.

  7. Ed R Says:

I didnt’ watch it. IT wasn’t on in this country. But, if I was in that coutnry I might not have watched it either. I’m just not much ofa tv kinda guy.

  8. Ed R Says:

Oh, and whoever you are, tell Cliffs to have a nice vacation.

  9. * (asterisk) Says:

Didn’t watch it, cos whichever way you look at it, it was Take That. And that can’t be a wholly healthy pursuit for any 30-something man on a Saturday night.

  10. Ed R Says:

Ohhh! Take THAT, THis is THis!

  11. overnighteditor Says:

It seems too long since I heard Tom Paulin say “…I rather _liked_ it”

Thking back, I rather liked it.

  12. Ed R Says:

Did you get a reciept for it, o.n.e? ;)

  13. * (asterisk) Says:

Ooh, I saw 10 minutes of the repeat last night. I saw them do a new song called “Shine”. I was embarrassed when they danced. Terrible.

  14. Mel Says:

I’d just like to say Cliff, how proud I am of you to put aside your musical snobbery that pervades this blog on a daily basis and admit to enjoying something not very cool.

I loved the show in fact I got quite emotional watching it (mostly because it reminded me of my uni days and dancing a the disco) I thought they were very brave to do it live.

Interesting that Robbie’s new album has done comparatively badly to his other albums now that the rest of the group are doing so well…I fear a backlash.

  15. Sooz Says:

Why do people spend their time making unpleasant comments on peoples’ blogs? If they don’t like them - why don’t they not look at them?

I watched a few little bits of Take That and thought they did quite well although I didn’t like all the celebrity ‘gushing’ that was done.

Fair play to them - they did bloody well without Robbie - and that’s no mean feat!

  16. Sooz Says:

And I KNOW I put an apostrophe in the wrong place but that’s because I CAN ok?

  17. Mel Says:

I read this blog sooz because I know Cliff and I want to support him. I also think that if you can’t take any comment from a reader that is not necessarily complimentary, then you’re probably in the wrong job.

Anyway he admits to being a musical snob!

  18. sooz Says:

There’s ‘not necessarily complimentary’ and destructive negativity though isn’t there Mel?

Nobody minds constructive criticism - it’s healthy and it can be inspiring. However, destructive (accusatory) negativity serves no purpose but to make the recipient feel bad. How can that ever be a good thing?

  19. Cliff Says:

You know, this is a lot like my childhood.

  20. * (asterisk) Says:

I read this blog cos I like it, but I don’t know Cliff. Were my comments mean?

  21. sooz Says:

    * noooo! Now I’m feeling like a ‘bad parent’! (are there any good ones?!)

I’ll crawl back under my stone shall I?

  22. Wendy Says:

*, I first read that as “I read this blog cos I know it, but I don’t like Cliff”. All kinds of trouble.

  23. * (asterisk) Says:

    Phew!
