A recent update to Facebook allows you to group your contacts into lists. I've created one called "Plonk" in the hope that one day they'll allow you to check a box saying "Ignore all status updates and application messages from everyone on this list." I'm seriously considering total withdrawal from Facebook, I'm not sure what I get out of it that I didn't before, it just adds a complicated social dimension to my life when it needs to be simpler. I don't know what they get out of it but most of them require that you invite at least 20 friends to share in the app before you get to see your 'results', so it's just a crock. Not only will those application invitations disappear by magic, it will also automatically block the applications. Do you use Firefox, Cliff? If so, install Greasemonkey and then this script.
