I think that irony is a term best applied to a situation in which you've created your own bad luck, whether advertently or inadvertently. Irony would be something like, I don't know, if you owned a car that had a major mechanical fault, and you sold it to someone without telling them about the major fault and then they ran over your gerbil because the fault in the car meant they couldn't stop in time when they saw the gerbil.
