Weekend Song – Richard Thompson

November 8, 2008

Here’s a guy who does two things better than most – writing about disintegrating relationships and playing guitar that scares the bejesus out of me, and in this song he does both.

The guitar solo at the end is unique and brutal. It even sounds like a break-up. Or a break down. Either way, rather him than me.

It’s sad and angry without relying on the blues, leaning on folk and forces best not reckoned with. He also wrote this Weekend Song you may have heard last summer.

But this gives me goosebumps to listen to and you think the only thing he loves is his music, and he sometimes hates even that.

Slip of the tongue, squeeze of the hand -
that’s the way that it shows.
